BRC classes square up for the fight
Aside from the overall battle for victory in the MSA British Rally Championship, there are guaranteed to be fiercely fought tussles for class honours, as the 2009 season bursts into life on Bulldog International Rally North Wales this Saturday.

After two successful years, the Rally 1, 2, 3 and 4 class structure will remain in the BRC, the mainstay of which are the one-make series’, each fitting neatly into a class apiece.

Rally 1 will continue to encompass the Swift Sport Cup and other production cars up to 1600cc, while Rally 2 still encompasses the Citroën C2R2 Cup original and new Max specification 1600cc cars, as well as any other modified 1600s.

The only change to rally 3 is the adoption of the Fiesta SportTrophy and other 2 litre production (Group N) car which have moved from R2. Rally 3 still includes cars in the BRC’s Diesel Rally Cup and Super 1600 cars.

Rally 4 is where the four wheel drive machinery resides; Mitsubishi and Subaru being the mainstay. But there is still the option for Super 2000 screamers to compete for R4 and overall honours within the BRC.

The front runners in the three non-4WD classes will probably play a supporting role on gravel if the conditions are wet, but the lightweight cars should come into their own when the Championship moves to asphalt in May.

There will undoubtedly be some surprisingly tight finishes in the classes, but the fantastic condition of the Rally North Wales stages might even allow some giant killing too; watch out for the two wheel drive the crews doing their dry-weather dances in the Bala services area.
